Every time I think I've seen the last of these horrible, hateful machines in the Hertz inventory another one appears from the woodwork to taunt me. So what fresh new level of hell have we discovered today? A front bumper and grill that screams half-assed badge engineering job? Check. Bald tires on misaligned wheels? Check. Over 60k on the odometer? Check. Mud caked undercarriage? Check.
"Lipstick on a pig" levels of fake wood grain paneling? Check. Four speed slushbox connected to a stuttering and shaking engine that hasn't had an oil change in 12,000 miles because it's been on rent for two straight months? Check. Customer installed air freshener that attempts - and fails miserably - to hide the fact that they smoked in here? Check. Rock hard seats upholstered in fabric that has the softness of concrete? Check. Completely trashed interior?
Check and double check.
Well, looks like we have everything to make a complete shitbox.
EDIT: I should have specified, I work for Hertz.
I'm a transporter.

Here, complimentary blood stains!

And feces of unknown origin!

That's butt mud.

I think that speaks more of Hertz being a shit company at maintaining their fleet, than to the car itself.
Well, as far as the stains dirt and bald tires go....

Oh god I was really hoping for a backstory from the last long term tenant! Could you make up something hilarious?

Looks like a future Drivetime or JD Byrider car to me.

I wouldn't have even accepted that, I would have told them to shove that aveo where the sun doesn't shine
60k on a rental car? Usually rental cars are sold off after 20-30k so they still have some value when they are resold.

Well, this car had no value when it was bought new, so...

You would be well within your rights to return to the desk and demand - loudly if there are other customers nearby (increases the pressure on them to make you go away happy) - for another car due especially the staining on the rear seats. They would have/could have/should have given you another car, likely even upgraded you into something bigger/better.
You would still be well within your rights to ask for another car even if this one had 20 miles on the odo, as it is indeed a sad high-mileage POS. I too laughed at all the lipstick put on this Korean pig. If the tires and alignment were also off, then that's a safety issue and for maximum shock value, that's the argument you'd loudly use when returning to the counter ("You rented me an unsafe car!").
If you happen to be at an airport, be willing to walk away and try to get something as a walk-up customer at another company's desk. If you are forced to deal with this company in particular due to work, then complain to your boss about the shit cars you've gotten. He may complain to the account manager, and results may happen.
But if you don't complain - in a rush to get going? That's the most common reason - then I'm afraid to say you'll be stuck driving a POS like that if that rental location's standards are, as they are here, not up to par.
Could be worse, though. You could have gotten a Yaris.

That mess is a testament to how much that customer hated being in that car. I can't blame them, I don't want to drive that car and I get paid to.

Well, the thing is I work for Hertz as a transporter (and yes, every time I say that I do my best/worst Jason Statham impersonation), so I don't really have much of a choice.

The only think I know is that they were a Marine Corps 1st Lieutenant and should have known better.

Its to bad you don't get to drive e38's around all day

The best I can hope for on a given day is an automatic V6 Mustang.

Ah, so it was a "dirty", then :P
Yea, a dirty POS is an occupational hazard.
So you took the car out of service for an oil change and deep cleaning treatment, yes? Your article gives one the impression that you were a customer and rented a car that nobody should be expected to accept.

It's not all bad. Many rental fleets will have "special equipment", like the 3-series, C300, Camaro and Mustang SS/GT (or more usually, RS/V6), Challenger R/T, Volvo C30 and even the 2.5 Golf (while its not a hot hatch, it's definitely a warm hatch).

Sorry, should have specified.

my brother had the chance to rent a camaro SS through hertz when he was on business, he said as a rental car its great, but as a car he'd want to buy, not even on the radar.
I also think it had no tire tread left when it was returned... oops!
